The House of Representatives has passed the first two employment-related pieces of legislation for 2009:  The Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 and the Paycheck Fairness Act.  Neither are good news for employers.  The Lily Ledbetter FPA will extend the statute of limitations for equal pay disputes, and the Paycheck Fairness Act will allow recovery of compensatory and punitive damages for equal pay violations.  The PFA also appears to expand the coverage of the FLSA’s anti-retaliation provision.

The Pennsylvania Labor and Employment Law Blog has the update here.  We will do a more detailed post on new employment laws if they are enacted into law.  In the meantime, companies should not be slashing their budget for human resources and employment law costs for 2009.
