Our latest update on recent jury verdicts and settlements after the break.

VA – Two cases were recently settled while on appeal before the Virginia Supreme Court.  In Spear v. Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority, the circuit court had granted the defendant’s motion to dismiss when the plaintiff raised the ad damnum by $175,000, a fundamental change in the nature of the case.  In Hyland v. Raytheon Technical Services Co., which was before the supreme court for the third time, the plaintiff claimed that she had been defamed by her supervisor in a performance evaluation.  The court had granted the plaintiff’s petition for appeal of a defense verdict based on her claim that the judge had misinstructed the jury.

TX – Two adult entertainment clubs in Houston agreed to settle an age discrimination suit for $60,000 brought by a former waitress who alleged that younger male managers called her “old” and told her she had symptoms of memory loss, and then fired her without explanation.

MS – A federal jury awarded a former conservation officer $38,000 in a gender discrimination suit brought against the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.  The former officer alleged that she was fired after she complained of discrimination.

WY – A federal jury found in favor of the employer in a sexual harassment and retaliation suit brought by the EEOC on behalf of a former female employee who alleged she was retaliated against after complaining about sexual harassment by a co-worker.

NY – A federal jury awarded $1.25 million to ten female employees of a grocery store who alleged they were sexually harassed by the manager.

NC – The Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit upheld a jury’s verdict in favor of a female plaintiff who alleged she was passed over for a promotion at a local air agency because of her gender.

CA – Lucasfilm, Ltd., will likely pay $1.2 million in legal fees following a jury verdict of $113,800 in lost wages awarded to a pregnant woman who alleged she was fired because of her pregnancy just days before beginning her new position as a personal assistant.

AL – A federal jury awarded a former employee $314,000 on his retaliation claim alleging he was fired after he filed an EEOC charge for race discrimination.
