Final Rule on I-9 Employment Verification Effective Today

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published their final rule on I-9 employment eligibility verification for employees effective May 16, 2011.  The final rule adopts the interim rule that was issued on December 17, 2008, and makes several changes to improve the integrity of the employment verification process.  More after the break. Fusion Centers?

My interest was piqued when I saw a report in the February 2011 issue of HR Magazine that "fusion centers have been established to facilitate cooperation among [government] agencies. . . .  Wage and hour investigators, ICE auditors and tax auditors are now all in one place to share resources, leverage information and pursue top-to-bottom audits."  Having never heard of a "fusion center," I turned to Google for the answer.  More after the break. New I-9 Effective April 3, 2009

Despite delays, the USCIS has announced that the new Form I-9 for verification of eligibility for employment must be used, effective April 3, 2009.  The USCIS also issued a new Handbook for Employers that reflects the updates to the form.  The press release "reminding" employers to use the new form is here.  A Questions & Answers page is here. ...

Expired Documents No Longer Valid For Employment Authorization

The Department of Homeland Security has issued an amended regulation regarding the types of acceptable identity and employment authorization documents and receipts that employees may present to their employers for completion of the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification.  Employers should be aware that under this interim rule, employers no longer may accept expired documents to verify employment authorization on the Form I-9.  The interim rule also adds a new document to the list of acc...
